Peiskos Lit is a global youth literary magazine dedicated to fostering a diverse & cozy space for budding writers. Our nonprofit organization was founded in 2023.
“Peiskos”
In Norwegian, “peis” means fireplace. The word “peiskos” describes the coziness of sitting snug in front of a fireplace. We believe that this word encapsulates the feeling we hope to nurture within the hearth of our community — safe, snug and comfortable. Here, young writers and their distinct voices are met with open arms, and are allowed to ebb and flow as they grow as writers. We encourage you to gather around the fireplace and add your own kindles to the flame!
Our thesis
Our thesis is neat and simple: We founded Peiskos to cultivate a community space where writers feel free to play around with their writing, and get it workshopped or published when they are ready. We are more than a literary magazine. We are a hub of accessibility.
Why is accessibility so important to the written craft? Because it should be, and because in the majority of cases it unfortunately is not. Rainer Maria Rilke, the renowned poet, said (fittingly so) in a letter to a young poet that proof of strong writing should come from the inside, not the outside— That if a poem is written from the heart, no rejection from any outside source could deceive a writer of its quality.
However, writers who frequently submit to publications sometimes forget about the intrinsic, undoubted value in their work. Our job here at Peiskos is to create a space where writers can find beauty and importance in all of their work— A space where writers are free to experiment and free to be bold, a space where artists can distinguish themselves from their work and grow with it, a space where a writer can hold their work at arms length and then bring it in to their heart.
