Summer Poetry COntest:
Kairosclerosis
“Kairosclerosis” (noun): The moment you realize that you’re currently happy—consciously trying to savour the feeling—which prompts your intellect to identify it, pick it apart and put it into context, where it will slowly dissolve until it is little more than an aftertaste.
—John Koenig, The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows (2021)
A Preface From Your Peiskos Editor-In-Chiefs
Peiskos Literary Magazine - Kairosclerosis Contest Preface
Written by Cheryl Chen and Mia Liang
Happiness, warmth, belonging — these are the feelings that drove the start of Peiskos Literary Magazine. Writing is a process that demands a lot emotionally, mentally, and even physically (for those familiar with late nights spent drafting instead of sleeping) from the writer. Community is often our main source of solace when overwhelmed with feelings, or underwhelmed by lack of inspiration. Collaborating with three wonderful lit mags, reading works from more than 70 talented writers, and contemplating this contest’s theme fuelled Peiskos Lit’s mission to attract a vibrant community of writers.
Yet, the definition of the word “Kairosclerosis” pushed us to rethink what happiness can mean and look like. In the Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows, John Koenig writes:
“Kairosclerosis (noun): The moment you realize that you're currently happy—consciously trying to savor the feeling—which prompts your intellect to identify it, pick it apart and put it in context, where it will slowly dissolve until it's little more than an aftertaste.”
Happiness, sorrow, regret; feelings that seem to stand on opposite sides of a field can co-exist in one poem, one story. For us, the most joyful part of this contest was reading submitters' distinct interpretations of the theme. As we moved through each piece of work, we found that our definition of kairosclerosis changed and expanded, time and time again. So thank you, all participants, for putting in the passion and for trusting us with your words.
No matter the results of your submission, we encourage each and every participant to keep writing, reading, and putting your work out there. Seeking publication is a long, unsure process; but, it is also a process in which writers and artists find like-minded peers and their own literary spaces to thrive in. With that, we hope you continue to engage with the indie lit scene.
Peiskos Lit is delighted to have had this opportunity. From breaking the ice during online meetings with a bunch of introverted artists and writers (thank you, discord soundboard), to marveling over poems that make the hairs on the back of our necks stand, it’s truly been a beautiful time. Reading this contest’s issue, we hope you savor the aftertaste of these works of art.
Warmly always,
Peiskos Literary Magazine
